Olympus 45mm f1.8 on the Panasonic G6

Panasonic Lumix G6 with Olympus 45mm f1.8 (black version)

What are the best lenses for your Panasonic G6?

These are my favourites:

Olympus 45mm f1.8
Panasonic 20mm f1.7
Panasonic 14-45mm f3.5-5.6

In fact these are the only native M4/3 (Micro 4/3rds) lenses I own and the one that rocks the most has to be the Olympus 45mm f1.8.  The 45mm is almost the reason to buy a M4/3 camera.  It's possibly the best M4/3 lens - period.

Why?  It's affordable, compact, stylish (especially in silver) and the optical performance is outstanding.

It's versatile because the focal length is not too long, unlike the Olympus 75mm f1.8, so can be used in a variety of circumstances.  I sometimes leave home with just the 45mm because I like it that much.

Here's a few random shots taken with the 45mm the other day.

Cafe - aperture f2.5
Mr Findlay taken by Thomas - aperture f2.0
Aperture f2.0

This street shot of the young lady was taken at waist level using touch shutter on the articulating screen. The result is excellent considering I didn't use continuous autofocus or subject tracking - just good old fashioned single AF and single shot drive mode.   To be honest I've never used subject tracking on any camera.  The articulating screen is great for this type of candid street photo.

Leslie - aperture f2.5 - 1/100 sec

The Panasonic G6 will link the shutter speed to the focal length when using Auto ISO. In Aperture Priority (the AE setting I use the most) the camera will choose a shutter speed of 1/100 sec or faster for the 45mm lens in order to prevent jitter (camera shake).  You will get motion blur at 1/100 sec if the subject is moving in the frame as you can see in the picture of Leslie.  His face is sharp and there's motion blur from his moving hand.

Aston Martin taken by Thomas - aperture f2

It's still possible to get some background blur from a distance.  I want an Aston Martin.

Aperture f2

Very shallow depth of field can be achieved with the 45mm lens.  The bokeh is buttery smooth!

Vintage ski jacket - aperture f2.5

Having a clothing business myself I'm always looking out for interesting gear, especially on young people.

Aperture f2.0
The sun always shines in Pinner - aperture f5
Pinner Village - aperture f7.1

If you've got a M4/3 camera or thinking about getting one, the 45mm f1.8 is a must have lens.  You'll probably want to glue it to the camera!
