Photography website PetaPixel has reported how Conde Nast’s Vogue Magazine has hatched a veiled plot to secure free images through it’s New Exposure Photography Competition. The competition is aimed at up and coming photographers and promises the winner a £10,000 assignment and a year of agency ‘mentorship’ plus other perks.
The competition rules or terms and conditions, if you like (that many may not read in its entirety, if at all), effectively states that the photos submitted by all entrants can be used by Conde Nast whenever, wherever and for as long as they like without compensation to the photographer. This means that all of those up and coming photographers, winner or losers, will hand over their best images for unlimited free use saving Vogue a lot of money on expensive photo shoots. Yes, all that hard work for free!

The entrants to the competition are about to get a crude introduction to the photography business and unfortunately, ‘Intellectual Property’ law.
I guess this is a lesson for all of us: before submitting or uploading photos anywhere, check the small print if you value your images.
