Give me bokeh!
I think it’s fair to say that everyone likes a bit of bokeh (background blur). However, not all lenses will be able to produce good bokeh. Bokeh is a property of the lens so if you’re looking for that creamy goodness it’s important to know what lens will be suitable. A telephoto zoom at the long end will give you background blur in portrait shots but the bokeh is likely to be underdeveloped and not as smooth as a portrait lens, which is designed to give good quality bokeh. The Olympus 45mm f1.8 fits the bill perfectly.
The 45mm f1.8 is a classic portrait lens. It offers superb sharpness, a fast aperture and represents good value for money at approx. £220. It is already sharp at f1.8 and the bokeh is creamy smooth.

Despite the metal looking exterior the lens barrel is made from high-grade plastics but with a metal lens mount. The lens is made up of 9 elements in 8 groups with 7 circular aperture blades for smooth rendition of out of focus areas. It is very small and light and the autofocus is fast and silent.
This is not intended to be a technical review of the lens but just an informative guide to create awareness of what lenses are worth consideration.
Here are some shots I took with the 45mm f1.8.

The 45mm f1.8 is also useful as a short telephoto lens. The fast autofocus means it performs very well for this application.
